Blasts From The Past

Handicapped Kids Can Now Have Good Fitting Glasses

erin-marina-specs4usMaria Dellapina is a single mother of a special child “Erin” who has Down’s Syndrome and vision problems. Maria is also an optician for over 20 years and decided that the eyeglasses Erin had were inadequate. The glasses would slip down her face and Erin would even hide them from her mother.

Maria decided to create an eyeglass frame that fits the needs of handicapped kids who sometimes have uniquely shaped heads and faces. It was a market just waiting to be catered to. Parents can now give their special children eyeglasses that fit, make them beautiful and motivate them to read.

Often, special children don’t want to bring attention to the fact their glasses don’t fit so they won’t read in public.  Maria calls her creation “Erin’s World” frames. These frames will come as big relief to the many parents of handicapped children out there. There’s an estimated 400,000 people with Down’s Syndrome in the U.S.A. alone and the majority of them have vision problems. These kids have to have corrective lenses before preschool age.

Maria created a company to sell those special specs and called it “Specs4us.” So far Specs4us has sold over 3,000 pair in the first 6 months of opening on June of ‘08.  Maria is filling a desperate need for the children, their families and the market! Another example of great entreprenuership in action.
